The first part of the trip will be devoted to the Minho area with its green wines. In the second part, you will discover the wines of the Douro, with a special emphasis on the port wine.
This package has about 350km, going through two major production regions of Portuguese wine.
You can also add an extension to the demarcated region of Valpaços, lasting one day.
Day 1: Taking as its starting point the city of Porto, head toward Monção and visit the Palace of Alvarinho, a space dedicated to the dissemination of Alvarinho wine. Enjoy visiting some of the historical heritage of Monção and appreciate the rich history of this town. You can see the Mother Church of the twelfth century, the churches of Mercy and St. Anthony Capuchin and Military Fortress. There are also many stately homes, like the Palace Brejoeira in neo-classical style, or the House of Wheels. In the afternoon, visit a producer of Alvarinho wine. Take a tour through the vineyards, visit the winery and do a wine tasting. For dinner, try the delicious roasted lamb or succulent saffron rice.
Day 2: Begin the journey to Penafiel and discover its rich heritage as the Mother Church or Church of Saint Martin, the Shrine of Our Lady of Mercy or Sameiro, the Church of Mercy of Penafiel, Church of Ajuda, the Pelourinho, the chapels of Santa Luzia and of Our Lady of Guia. Another option is the Municipal Museum of Penafiel, located in the beautiful Palace of Pereira do Lago, and dedicated to the history, archeology and ethnography of the region. In the region you’ll find several palaces and manor houses, and fine estates, mirroring the economic power that Penafiel has achieved over the centuries, such as Quinta da Aveleda. A unique place, internationally known for its wines, but also for its architecture, parks and gardens. Was honored in 2011 with the Best Wine Tourism Award 2011. The end of the day is in the city of Peso da Régua.
Days 3 and 4: The second part of the trip is dedicated to the Douro wine region. Stay two nights near the town of Peso da Régua, in the rural tourism of producer of Douro wines. The city is the epicenter of all economic activity linked to wine, with centuries of history, a bit spread throughout the region. The nature occupies a prominent place, with stunning scenery. The region was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, and must visit some belvederes where you can observe the grandeur of the scenery. The San Leonardo and San Antonio Loureiro are two examples. Visit the vineyard and the cellar of the producer, where you will be staying, learning the techniques of winemaking and in the end, do a wine tasting. On the second day, the customized itinerary takes you to discover the region and its history. If you prefer, you can opt for a cruise on the Douro River, leading you to discover the river and the Douro valley, in a unique way.
Day 5: After another night’s rest, your journey continues to Oporto, whose connection to the port wine trade, makes the city so well known worldwide. On your journey, you will visit the cellars and taste the Port wine. At the end of the day, to end your holiday in style, have dinner by the riverside, having as scenery the beautiful city of Oporto.
Day 6: Check out from hotel and departure to Oporto airport.
